Where Are You Now?
Self-Care February Day 15: Look at how far you've comeWe’re halfway through the month which makes it a perfect time to take stock of where you are on your self-love journey.
Sometimes, it’s very easy to dismiss or forget all the little wins you’ve had along the way. You beat yourself up about the things you haven’t done, ignoring all the things you have done. You get caught up in “I should have done this” and “I should have done that” without seeing all the wonderful things you have done.
I’m almost at the end of a year long songwriting mentorship. I had a session with one of my favourite mentors, Shelly McErlaine, yesterday and I mentioned how I wasn’t making any money from my music yet and I was starting to feel the pressure with only two months left, because I want to do a second year. She pointed out all the things I have achieved – as well as the fact that I’m actually not far from being able to monetise my music.
- I’ve learned from mentors who are at the top of the industry and made some incredible connections with some of them.
- I’ve met some talented people and co-written songs I absolutely adore.
- I’ve rediscovered my own songwriting abilities.
- I’ve learned a little about production and know where to go to find out more.
- I’ve started to put together music for chakra dance meditation and am near to releasing it.
- I’ve attended some amazing workshops and built more relationships through them.
- I’ve gone from barely being able to write a song a year to being able to write a song every day if I need.
That’s quite a lot! But when I was looking at the things I haven’t done, I couldn’t see the things I had.
So if you’ve been following along with this blog, you might be thinking “I should be meditating by now” or “I should be making more time for myself”. If that’s the case, I want you stop right now. Instead, look back at the past couple of weeks and look at the things you have done. It doesn’t matter what it is, a big achievement or a small step. Make a list of at least five wins and then celebrate! Make yourself a luxury hot chocolate with cream and marshmallows or take a long, hot bubble bath. While you enjoy it, think about all the things you’ve done. You’ve made progress, even if you can’t see it because you’re in the thick of it. Look at where you are now compared to where you were last year. How have things changed? How would you like them to change?
Here’s the thing. If you aren’t living the life you want, it’s always possible to switch things up. Just five minutes every day working on something related to your goals will take you a long way towards them, even if they seem impossibly far away right now.
And the best bit? It’s never too late to start again.
Wanted to exercise daily but can’t remember the last time you got off the couch? No worries. Find a workout video on YouTube and get moving right now.
Wanted to start meditating but find yourself going to bed at night, kicking yourself because you forgot again? That’s fine. Spend five minutes focusing on your breath before you go to sleep. (Or look back at earlier blogs to find other meditation techniques you might like to experiment with.)
If you’ve fallen out of the habit of doing something which brings you joy, instead of beating yourself up for failing, simply start doing it again. And if you need to restart again and again, that’s okay. Nobody is watching. Nobody is judging. This is something you’re doing because you want to, something which is fun. And if it’s not fun, ask yourself, why am I still trying to make this happen? Maybe your energies would be better spent on something else.
If you need some support on discovering where you should be focusing your attention and energy, the Journey Through the Chakras retreat will help you discover so much about yourself in just one day. Time is running out to secure your place, so book your ticket now.
