Beauty in Diversity
Finding the right approach for youRecently I started holding in-person meditation classes.
I’ve really loved facilitating these. Obviously, it’s great to finally be able to gather together in groups for a shared experience, but one of the biggest benefits for me is the ability to provide a much more personalised, adaptable approach to teaching meditation.
Don’t get me wrong – online classes really work and I think we’ve all learned just how versatile going online can be. But still, there’s nothing quite like getting together with a group of like minded people to learn and grow together.
One of the meditations I covered in the first class was mantra meditation, using “thank you” as a mantra. It was fascinating to see different people’s responses to it.
Some people loved it.
Some people were pleasantly surprised by how simple it was.
Some people enjoyed doing a gratitude practice without having to think of specific things to be grateful for.
But some people found that using a two word phrase interfered with their breathing. It didn’t flow as smoothly for them as for other people.
And do you know what? Every single response was completely valid and equal.
There is no such thing as a universal one size fits all when it comes to spirituality. A meditation which can be beautiful and soothing for one person can be irritating and boring for another.
There is nothing wrong with you if you do not like a particular form of meditation. There is nothing wrong with you if you don’t like meditation at all! The trick is to figure out what result you are looking for and then explore different mechanisms of achieving that result until you find the one which works for you.
And that one type might change as you progress. You might love a meditation type you used to hate. (Hello walking meditation! I see you!) You might simply not be in the mood for something one day and need to try something different.
Just keep your focus on what it is you want to achieve and let that be your guide. Don’t let anyone tell you what you ‘should’ be doing.
If you need some help in developing the confidence to follow your own path, I’m holding a confidence masterclass at the end of this month. We’ll be exploring a range of techniques to help you tap into and unleash your inner confidence in any situation. Replays are available so you can watch as many times as you like! Book your place now.
